I have just volunteered (don't tell my husband) to be the editor of The Stuart-Mosby Historical Society newsletter. The wonderful lady who used to fulfill this duty, alas, passed away after a period of illness. I will not be able to fill her shoes, but I shall do my best.
In any event (and I might have told all of you this before), I would like to invite those on the forum to become members of the Society. It requires a member in good standing (and my standing had better be good or let them find another editor! ) to recommend members. The dues are $20 a year (collected in June, I believe) and are "pro-rated" so that if you join now, I assume that you only pay $10 - but I'd have to check with that. As a member, you get a discount on the twice annual bus tour of Mosby's Confederacy run by those great Southrons, Don Hakenson and Gregg Dudding (we do a lot of placing flags on the graves of Confederate soldiers) as well as the bi-monthly newsletter.
We have folks in Virginia, Maryland, Pennsylvania, California, Florida, Noo Yawk, England, Belgium etc. so you don't have to be local. However we do have "events" like birthday celebrations for both Stuart and Mosby and a wonderful memorial celebration for the January babies, Marse Robert, Stonewall and Commodore Maury. This takes place in the Confederate Congress building and is followed by a lunch at a very nice restaurant in Richmond.
It's a great Society. The members are happy to help if folks have questions - especially regarding your Confederate ancestors. Anybody who is interested can e-mail me at vaproto@optonline.net. I can e-mail you the membership form and any other information that you might wish. I have also become Membership Chairman because the lady who died also fulfilled that office. I'm dying to find out if she also was obligated to sweep the streets of Warrenton! I'll have to find my broom!
